From Frango mint chocolates to a Walnut Room ornament, Macy’s is honoring legacy regional department store Marshall Field’s this holiday season.

Macy’s, which swapped out the iconic Chicago-based Marshall Field’s name in 2006, regularly offers products celebrating the storied department store.

This holiday season, Macy’s features a teddy bear, shirts, bags, several different ornaments and even a puzzle — all items featuring Marshall Field’s.

Among the ornaments for sale are the Chicago department store with its iconic clock and Marshall Field’s ribbon.

For generations of Chicago shoppers, Marshall Field’s was a landmark destination.

The business grew from a dry-goods operation into one of the nation’s best-known retailers, eventually becoming Marshall Field & Co. in 1881. Its State Street flagship helped define the modern department store, drawing customers with elaborate window displays, restaurants and an emphasis on service.

In 2004, Target Corporation sold Marshall Field’s to May Co. — the longstanding owner of several regional department stores, including Kaufmann’s and Filene’s. But in 2005, May Co. was acquired by Federated Department Stores, which owned Macy’s.

A year later, on Sept. 9, 2006, Federated converted all Marshall Field’s to Macy’s. In the 20 years since, Chicagoans have continued to protest the name change.
