This holiday season, Pittsburgh’s iconic Point State Park is adorned with a sparkling new symbol of festive cheer.
Duquesne Light, in a commitment to sustainability, erected a magnificent 60-foot-tall Christmas tree, ushering in a new era of energy efficiency.
The “Three Rivers Tree” includes more than 22,000 LED pixel lights. It uses water ballasts as a foundation to protect park grounds.
This new tree almost didn’t happen. Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Duquesne Light had planned to end the more than 30-year tradition at the end of the 2021 holiday season.
But public backlash led to not only another year for the previous tree but also the creation of an energy-efficient tree that would not harm the park’s ground.
The new tree cycles through a 15-minute display full of winter and holiday season fun.
Embracing the latest in technology, the tree is illuminated entirely by energy-efficient LED lights, enhancing its brilliance while minimizing environmental impact.
Duquesne Light’s dedication to eco-friendly practices shines through this innovative approach, aligning the joy of the season with a commitment to a greener future.
Replacing a beloved tree that stood tall for over 30 years, this new addition pays homage to tradition while embracing modern advancements.
“We are excited for the new iteration of this holiday symbol, which is a tremendous example of sustainable innovation and its connection to environmental stewardship,” DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn in a news release. “Thank you to DLC for their continued partnership at Point State Park and brightening the holiday season.”
