Best movies, TV shows to watch for Hanukkah

As family and friends gather to celebrate Hanukkah, here is a list of some movies and television shows to watch!

Any planned to run are noted below, if known. You can, hopefully, find them available on streaming services.

Movies

  • “An American Tail”: This adorable animated film actually begins on the first night of Hanukkah. Fievel’s father give him that signature blue hat. As his family is trying to evade cats (yes, an allegory for pograms) for a better life in America, Fievel becomes separated from them.
  • Mistletoe & Menorahs“: This Lifetime movie blends two faiths — even as each is ignorant of the other’s traditions.
  • Love, Lights, Hanukkah!“: It’s in the title! This Hallmark Channel movie stars Mia Kirshner, Ben Savage and Marilu Henner. A woman’s DNA test reveals she’s Jewish and leads to an unlikely romance over eight crazy nights. (2 p.m. Dec. 3)
  • Double Holiday“: This Hallmark Channel movie stars Carly Pope and Kristoffer Polaha. Rebecca’s plans for Hanukkah don’t go as planned when a possible promotion comes up. Rebecca and her “insufferable office mate” Chris, who When the company CEO asks Rebecca and her insufferable office mate, Chris, who is her main competition for the promotion, are tasked with planning the company Christmas party. Can the couple find holiday romance or will the looming promotion dim the lights on love? (Set to air 8 a.m. Dec. 2.)
  • Holiday Date“: Another Hallmark Channel movie, “Holiday Date” features Brooke (Brittany Bristow) who is dumped by her boyfriend right before Christmas. She enlists the help of actor Joel to fill in as her boyfriend. But, she’d previously called her real now-ex-love “Mr. Christmas” and worries about keeping the act going. Without ruining this too much, the family finds out. How do they handle Joel? And are Brooke and Joel falling for each other? (Set to air 2 p.m. Dec. 1.)
  • Hitched for the Holidays“: Starring Emily Hampshire, Joey Lawrence and Marilu Henner, this Hallmark Channel movie features Jewish and Italian-American families meddling into the lives of their kids. They fake a relationship only to discover it might be more real than they thought. (No 2021 airdate is listed.)
  • “Fiddler On the Roof”: This musical focuses on Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka. He tries to keep his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as influences threaten his family’s lives.
  • “The Hebrew Hammer”: This movie centers on Mordechai Carver, who is Jewish and determined to save Hanukkah from Damian Claus (an evil son of Santa).
  • “Eight Crazy Nights”: This animated Adam Sandler cartoon shares the story of a man who is an alcoholic and is taken in by an elderly couple.

TV Shows

  • “Rugrats” — “A Rugrats Chanukah”: Tommy Pickles’ grandparents read the story of Hanukkah to the kids. If you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, this was likely your first real foray into learning about Hanukkah.
  • “Friends” — “The One with the Holiday Armadillo”: Ross has his son Ben for the holidays and attempts to teach his son about Hanukkah — using an armadillo costume.
  • “Frasier” — “Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz”: Frasier’s son is Jewish, and while shopping for a menorah, Frasier gives a woman the wrong idea that he’s Jewish. The woman arranged a date for her daughter. But things don’t go according to plan when Faye and her daughter make an appearance at Frasier’s Christmas decorated apartment.
