The Queer Big Apple Corps Marching Band will become the first queer marching band to perform live at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The band performed during the 2020 event when Macy’s scheduled a virtual show.
The 2022 Macy’s Parade marks the first time a queer band will perform and march live in the iconic parade.
“When the band arrives, the spectators on the side are enjoying the parade, but as soon as they hear us, really everything stops,” James Cannon, one of the band’s other artistic directors, told the New York Daily News. “Children go on shoulders. People with their Bloody Marys on the sidewalk stand up. Everyone just looks at them. As soon as they come, everyone’s cheering.”
